Heinrich and Annemarie Böll as Translators
Annemarie and Heinrich Böll collaborated in translating well over a hundred novels, short stories and plays, children's books and non-fictional works.
Heinrich Böll discusses this activity in a letter to his publisher, J. C. Witsch, who had warned him against taking on too many translations. On June 30th 1956, Böll replies:
"With regard to translation work, I think you are wrong. I really enjoy it: it is a tremendous stylistic exercise and an excellent way to explore another author's world of imagery and thought. It does not interfere with one's own work. It is a slog only in quantitive terms; but in fact 90% of the work is actually done by my wife."
